Swapping your showerhead is a quick and easy way to upgrade your shower routine.
A new showerhead can be purchased for as little as $20 and models from top brands like Delta, Kohler, Jolie and Sproos can be found for less than $200.
Installing a showerhead is a beginner-friendly plumbing project that requires just a few tools and typically takes less than 30 minutes. Doing it yourself is a great way to make this a budget friendly bathroom renovation. You can often save more than $100 by installing your new showerhead yourself rather than hiring a handyman.
Here are the top 3 mistakes people make when installing a showerhead. Avoid them and you’ll be in the flow:
-
Not Using Plumber’s Tape: Plumber’s tape is a must when installing a showerhead. Failing to apply plumber’s tape (also called Teflon tape) to the threads of the shower arm can result in leaks. The tape helps seal the connection between the showerhead and the arm. You can find plumber’s tape in the plumbing aisle of your local hardware store. Plumber’s tape also comes included in the Character Faucet Installation Kit.
-
Skipping Cleaning of Threads: Dirt, debris, or old plumber’s tape residue left on the threads of the shower arm can prevent a proper seal, causing leaks. Clean the threads before attaching the new showerhead.
-
Using the Wrong Tools: It’s all too easy to damage your showerhead’s finish during installation. Showerheads are often coated in a chrome or painted finish that can easily get scratched or dinged by a wrench or pliers. Think twice before using just any old wrench for this project. Your best bet is to use a wrench or pliers with rubberized jaw protectors. These protect the finish of your showerhead while you are tightening the connection. Don’t have one of these? In a pinch, you can also wrap your wrench or pliers with plumber’s tape to help protect your new showerhead during installation.
