Creative Ways to Use Plants as Decor

Houseplants are more than just greenery—they’re an easy way to add life, color, and personality to your home. Whether you’re working with a small space, looking to add height and dimension, or simply want to bring a little nature indoors, plants can transform your space in fun and creative ways. And the best part? You don’t need any fancy DIY skills to get started! Here’s how to make plants the star of your home decor.

Why Plants Make Great Decor

Plants are an excellent addition to any home for several reasons. Many houseplants thrive on minimal care, making them perfect for busy homeowners who want a touch of greenery without the hassle. Beyond their ease of maintenance, plants also contribute to better air quality by filtering toxins and adding fresh oxygen to your space.

They bring texture and color, whether you prefer big, leafy greens or delicate trailing vines, giving your home a sense of depth and movement. Best of all, plants are incredibly versatile and complement any style—from modern and minimalist to boho and eclectic—making them a perfect decor choice no matter your aesthetic.

How to Hang Plants from the Ceiling

Want to add visual interest without taking up floor or shelf space? Hanging plants is an easy and stylish solution. First, make sure you choose your plants wisely. Opt for trailing plants like pothos, ivy, or string of pearls for a cascading effect.

Here's what you'll need:

power drill

stud finder

step ladder

pencil or painter's tape

vacuum or broom

plant and hanger

our plant hanging kit

Our Plant Hanging Kit will help you install a hook seamlessly and safely so your greenery stays put. It includes everything you need to hang: 2 hooks, 2 wood screws, 2 toggle bolts, and 2 running thread screws.

Pick the Right Hanging Method

Hooks & Ceiling Anchors: The safest way to hang plants. Use a drill and an anchor if you’re hanging a heavier plant.

Tension Rods: Great for renters! You can place them between walls or in window frames.

Macrame Hangers: These add a fun, boho touch while keeping plants secure.

Position for Light: Make sure your plant is getting the right amount of sunlight—some love direct light, while others prefer shade.

How to Use Our Plant Hanging Kit

Our kit allows you to hang plants with or without a joist.

Here's what to do if you do locate a joist:

Protect your floors with a drop cloth or prepare to vacuum after.

Run your stud finder over the hanging area. If your stud finder lights up, you have a joist!

If you find a joist, mark the spot where you'll install your hook.

Screw the wood screw (the shorter screw in your kit) into your hook.

Use the 1/8" drill bit to re-drill a hole in the ceiling slightly deeper than the length of the screw.

Hand screw your hook in until it's flush with the ceiling.

Hang your plant!

If you don't find a joist, follow these steps:

Protect your floors with a drop cloth or prepare to vacuum after.

Run your stud finder over the hanging area. If you don't locate a stud or joist, mark where you'd like to hang the plant.

Connect your threaded screw (the longer one in the kit) with your hook by screwing it in. Then attach your toggle bolt. The toggle's wings should face downward toward your hook.

Use your 9/16" drill bit (probably the largest in your set) to pre-drill a hole in the ceiling large enough to fit your closed toggle bolt through.

Insert the toggle into your ceiling. Squeeze the toggle closed and insert it into the hole you made. The wings will catch when you pull downward. Tug lightly to make sure it's secure.

Tighten your hook onto the ceiling. As you twist, the toggle bolt will create a strong hold.

How to Display Climbing Plants

Climbing plants like pothos, philodendron, and monstera can turn a boring wall into a lush, green masterpiece. Here’s how to let them shine:

Use Wall-Mounted Hooks or Clips: Command hooks or small adhesive clips allow you to train vines up the wall without nails.

Try a Trellis or Grid Panel: Attach a trellis to your wall or lean a metal grid panel against it for an instant climbing structure.

Wrap Around Furniture: Let vines drape over bookshelves, curtain rods, or bed frames for a natural, relaxed look.

Frame a Window: Secure climbing plants around a window for a whimsical, nature-inspired frame.

More Fun Ways to Decorate with Plants

Floating Shelves: Arrange plants at different heights for a layered, eye-catching display.

Hanging Planters in the Shower: Many plants, like ferns, love humidity—why not make your shower feel like a rainforest?

DIY Plant Ladder: Lean a wooden ladder against the wall and use the steps to hold different potted plants.

Repurpose Household Items: Old teacups, baskets, or even vintage suitcases can make unique plant containers.

Before placing your plants, research how much light and humidity they need to thrive. Some plants love bright, direct sunlight, while others prefer shaded corners.

If you plan to hang your plants or place them on shelves, opt for lightweight planters made of plastic or ceramic to ensure they stay secure. Finally, be mindful not to overwater—this is one of the most common mistakes new plant owners make. Too much water can lead to root rot, so it’s often better to underwater than overdo it!

With just a little creativity and some simple DIY tricks, you can turn your home into a lush, green oasis. Start with one or two plants and build from there—you’ll be amazed at how much personality they add to your space!
